Climate protest

Hello! This post will be about a brilliant climate march I went to in Bath on Friday.

Everyone at the march was holding banners - here's mine:

We started by marching through the streets of Bath for an hour while chanting loudly. We then stopped in the center of the shops where there was a open mic for anyone who wanted to speak (I didn't speak because I had not prepared anything but I might for the next protest!) There were some amazing and inspiring speeches (unfortunately we didn't get any on camera because we were too busy listening!)

This is a video taken at the march:

After that, we marched to the main shopping precinct. We got into a giant circle around the edge to stop people from walking through it and into the shops that are very non- eco friendly such as the Apple store and Primark.

After that we did another hour of marching the streets chanting.

Halfway through this, we blocked a main road so that people really noticed:

Blocking the road was quite exciting because all the cars were beeping at us and I felt quite rebellious!

Finally, we went to Kingsmead Square and had a mini "people's assembly" where we got into groups and discussed what changes we want to see in order to make Bath more environmentally friendly. My group said that more people should walk or cycle to places instead of using cars. We also said that public transport should be free or less expensive because it is more eco-friendly than cars. Finally, we said that there should be even more greenery in Bath shopping centre because of its positive impact on Co2.

Here are some of the chants that we did:

Call: What do we want?!

Response: Climate justice!

Call: When do we want it?!

Response: Now!!

(Repeat)

Call: Whose future?

Response: Our future!

Call: Whose planet?

Response: Our planet!

(Repeat)

Call: Extinction!!

Response: REBELLION!!!!

(Repeat)

Call: Show me what democracy looks like! Response: This is what democracy looks like!!

(Repeat)

All together: No more coal, no more oil, keep your carbon in the soil!

(Repeat)

To the tune of 'Seven Nation Army' (White Stripes)

All together: Stop the airport expansion!

(Repeat)

The climate protest was an amazing experience and I really liked because it was the first time it felt like I was really taking public action for the climate! Other protests have been nowhere near as active. It was also nice to meet new people who also cared about the environment. As well as this, it was great hearing everyone's brilliant speeches!

Different people we passed reacted differently to our march. Most people were clapping and cheering us on, some even joined in with the protest! These people made me more confident and happy in what I was doing and I chanted with even more enthusiasm. Other people disapproved of us and shouted "SHUT UP!" A few people even swore at us! But this just made me even more angry and determined to chant louder.

This march was planned by a fantastic organisation called The Bath Youth Climate Alliance who organise lots of protests in Bath. The next one in November will be even bigger than this one!

Here are the Photos we took at the march:

We hope you enjoyed this post and also that it has inspired you to take part in strikes and marches for the climate! There are lots of good protest sign ideas in these pictures and you can also look designs up online!

We will post again soon,
