A moment of coal less in history

Britain went coal free for more than a whole week since 1882!

Coal plants were first introduced in the UK in January of 1882. The UK was the first country to use coal to generate electricity, with a 93kW turbine at Holborn Viaduct in London that was designed by Thomas Edison.

The Met Office said this year’s spring was the sunniest since records began in 1929, with more than 573 hours of sunshine recorded between March 1 and May 27 – beating the previous record of 555.3 hours.

28% of Britain's energy source in the last month, around 30% is made from energy mixes, this month. The reason behind the collapse in requirement for energy is that because of the corona virus has shut down businesses and offices all around the country, it has also caused factories to slow down production as to abide new guide lines workers shifts have been staggered. The National Grid claimed this ‘incredible coal-free run" stands at 61 days(or 1,464 hours) as of the 10th of June the longest period since the industrial revolution This time five years ago the coal usage was at 5%, showing the level of progress made since then. This also inches us closer to the governments target to phase out all off Britain's coal fired plants in 2025 to reduce emissions. February this year became the greenest month on record in the UK.

Jobs

UK's oil and gas industry supports an estimated 375,000 jobs. This makes many people

worry what will happen if the government achieves net zero how many people will lose their jobs. However hundreds of thousands of new recruits will be needed as we work towards net zero in all sorts of sectors from scientist modeling options to engineers who will help manage solar panels and wind turbines.

Overall it will be a huge moment in history when Britain reaches No emission and hopefully we don't have to wait long for that moment.

We'll post again next week

Stay safe,
